ED2013 3/5 Reviews ED2013 Theatre Reviews
Rules Of The Game (Rose Red Theatre Company)
By Andy Leask | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
An uncomfortable, daring opening, in which three female inmates are forced to change into prison uniforms before the eyes of two, male, guards – and the audience – is let down by a lack of focus, and overly-ambitious writing. That a play about a women’s prison is critical of the system is to be expected, but the target of the play is unclear: is it the socio-economic pressures, which led these women to crime? Is it the flawed, monolithic judicial system that sentenced them? The dehumanising effect of prisons in general? The misogyny prevalent in society, and rampant in the penal system? The answer appears to be all of the above, which is a bit much to squeeze into just 45 minutes.
