Othello – Two Men (MJ Company)
By Samuel Graydon | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
Unfortunately, many things in this production of Shakespeare’s classic left me either disappointed or bemused. This two man re-imagining of ‘Othello’ is in Korean, which in itself is no problem. However, the show’s surtitles were projected onto a screen that meant that you had to look away from the actors to know what they were saying, and the translation often didn’t seem to keep pace with what was actually being said. The actors gave it their all during the performance, but some of the direction seemed misguided; for example, the occasions when a man sitting on the side of the stage wearing sunglasses would sing a song. Overall it was an odd and quite poor production.
Spotlites @ Merchants’ Hall, until 24 Aug, 6.40pm.
