Much Ado About Nothing (Dramawise and SkyBlue Theatre)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013
It takes real skill to pull off a Shakespearian comedy. Performers have to navigate intricate puns, melodramatic upsets and plot twists which can seem ridiculous to modern audiences if they’re not handled with care. It’s to their credit, then, that this very young company put on a witty, coherent show. With the text heavily abridged, the focus is the humour, and though they’re uneven, the cast gives a wholehearted effort. While there’s an over-reliance on outrageous deliveries and pantomime mugging, they demonstrate an understanding of the language that’s often absent in significantly more experienced performers. Shakespeare aficionados won’t find anything original or inspired here, but this is a strong production from actors just beginning what will likely be long careers.
C, until 17 Aug, 2.15pm.
