Martyr’s Crossing (Utah Valley University)
By Imogen Calderwood | Published on Sunday 18 August 2013
A re-telling of the Joan of Arc story, with the focus on the stage-friendly spiritual side rather than the battle scenes. We see Joan journey from her rustic girlhood to the soldier’s life, guided by her saints. Although a good production, there’s a lot of story to fit in a short time and as a result there are some very noticeable narrative leaps, making the play difficult to follow at times. Yet the cast are strong, coping well with the very mature themes in the play: the scene in which Joan is executed, the tragic climax of the production, is particularly good. A play about faith, and the questioning of faith, from a young cast with a lot to offer.
Gryphon Venues at the Point Hotel, until 9 Aug, 12.45pm.
