This production is based on the novel ‘Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close’ by Jonathan Safran Froer, in which the main character, a boy called Oskar, is struggling to cope with his father’s death  in 9/11. This powerful material loses some of it’s poignancy, however, due to the heavy dose of surrealism; notably the use of grotesque dolls and masks. There are some riveting and funny moments at the start and end of the play, but direction is lost in the middle with a diversion to Oskar’s grandparents. Aspects of ‘Hamlet’ have also been self-consciously introduced, but do not enhance Oskar’s character. If you’re interested in this story, it might be better to read the book or see the film.

Summerhall, until 16 Aug, 4.30pm.
