Junk (LADS & Boundless Theatre)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Sunday 18 August 2013
Telling a rather standard modern day morality tale of drop out drug culture, ‘Junk’ has a few good moments, but is mostly rather flat. The young cast don’t quite have the range to match the darkness of the tale – their joy is too tepid and their despair not deep enough – and, while the poetic prose may have worked in the original novel, the script sounds stilted and unrealistic on stage. Further, the narration tells us what the actors should be showing, stealing some of the impact of the show. The direction and staging is of a high standard, however, with the recurring use of water a very nice touch. Overall, though, this show doesn’t have enough bite to sustain it.
C, until 17 Aug, 10.45am.
