I Knew A Man Called Livingstone (Toto Tales)
By Sophie Baggott | Published on Monday 19 August 2013
This is a production of infectious spiritedness, in which two actresses, Mara and Isla Menzies, convincingly handled several personae each in their portrayal of scenes from Dr Livingstone’s African adventures, all the while exuding vigour and charisma. Their interaction with the audience often generated laughter, and the performance flowed so seamlessly that the hour felt prematurely over. The production team seemed a tight bunch, and it paid off. Stage dynamics were intimate, the staging and costumes deeply atmospheric, the actresses’ vocals exquisite. Undoubtedly a strong production, yet there were moments where my captivation slipped a little; snappier scripting might have done the trick. Nonetheless the hearty applause was richly deserved.
National Library of Scotland, until 21 Aug, 4.00pm.
