I Knew A Man Called Livingstone (Toto Tales)
By Sophie Baggott | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
An infectious spiritedness, just missing the ‘wow’ factor. The two actresses, Mara and Isla Menzies, convincingly handled several personae in their portrayal of scenes from Dr Livingstone’s African adventures, all the while brimming with vigour and charisma. Their interaction with the audience often delivered laughter, and the performance flowed so seamlessly that the hour seemed prematurely over. The production team seemed a tight bunch, and it paid off. Stage dynamics were intimate, the staging and costumes deeply atmospheric, the actresses’ vocals exquisite. Undoubtedly a strong production, but there were moments where my captivation slipped and the immersive spirit was broken. Snappier scripting might have done the trick; but nonetheless the hearty applause was richly deserved.
