His Majesty The Devil – A Play With Music (Elsewhere Ensemble)
By Priyanka Raval | Published on Friday 30 August 2013
This is a bizarre story: a young man, preparing for a terrorist attack for the following day, is visited by the Devil. And a violinist. A philosophical jousting match ensues between the Devil (who resembled an American Bruce Forsyth!), and the young man in the midst of an existential crisis, despairing at the world’s injustice and obsessed with the idea of a Utopia. With its three characters, one setting and little action, this is a plot very much driven by its philosophical theorising, and therefore perhaps a little inaccessible to anyone who doesn’t enjoy/isn’t au fait with Nietzche’s moral treatises. The sporadic outbursts of exquisite violin playing, though incongruous, I personally found the best part.
