H To He – I’m Turning Into A Man (Claire Dowie)
By Priyanka Raval | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
Inspired by Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’, Claire Dowie’s ‘H To He’ tells the story of how Helen wakes up one morning to discover she is gradually metamorphosing into a man. The physical deterioration of her femininity leads her to contemplate the construction of gender identity, and in doing so reveals its irrationality. Most remarkable about this performance is its fantastic script, which is both cleverly crafted and stylistically striking. It also manages to be absolutely hilarious without resorting to clichéd, gimmicky gags – which would have been tempting with subject matter such as this. Despite the unfortunate inclusion of random dance intervals (which were wholly unnecessary), this piece, simultaneously giving expression to and breaking down the gender binary, is insightful and entertaining.
