DNA (The King’s Players)
By Jade Wilson | Published on Friday 30 August 2013
A play written for young actors is a gift, but in ‘DNA’ the behaviour of this bunch of teenagers is extreme; they form a gang and bully a boy in the woods before elaborately weaving a story together to cover up his assumed death. Dennis Kelly’s script gives the company a hard task, in that none of the teenagers are particularly likeable; indeed the performances are mixed and some border on annoying. The gang’s obsession with mobile phones is a great touch with the current epidemic of internet trolling and the power of twitter but more could be done to create atmosphere. The very best moments are found in the tense silences: this is no playground.
Zoo Southside, until 17 Aug, 5.50pm.
