David Copperfield (Edinburgh Theatre Arts)
By Imogen Calderwood | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
Edinburgh Theatre Arts offer up a classic re-telling of Dickens’ semi-autobiographical work, ‘David Copperfield’. The story follows David from birth, through adversity and strife to eventual adulthood. Scattered along the way are several beautifully drawn characters, and it’s here that this production excels. The cast bring these characters to life in an enthusiastic and insightful manner, in a production that treats the original narrative with care and respect. John McLinder’s direction is good: he does all he can to make the two and a half hours engaging, combining the action with singing and sequences of movement. However, two and a half hours is a very demanding production time, and the show would be improved by a little trimming.
St Ninian’s Hall, until 17 Aug (not 15), 2.30pm, 7.30pm.
