CUT! (Crosswords Productions with Ian Watt)
By Kate Pasola | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
I really enjoy solo performances because, in thoughtful productions like ‘Cut!’, potential plot-obstacles (due to the absence of other actors) are transformed into opportunities for utter inventiveness and theatrical ingenuity. And, with a hint of puppetry and thoughtful lighting, Tomek Borkowy’s directorial choices here were mostly dynamic and refreshingly original; though, while Ian Watt’s grinning and chillingly jovial nature was magnificent and, at times, gorgeously terrifying to watch, the longer streams of speech could probably have been directed in a more engaging manner. And it did feel as though the play merely scratched the surface of fictional director Posterkrantz’s downfall and Hollywood’s moral pollution. But nevertheless, Watt’s talent mitigated the lack of narrative substance in this demanding production.
Hill Street Theatre, until 25 Aug, 4.05pm.
