Cadre (Chicago Shakespeare, Richard Jordan, Market Theatre Johannesburg, Adelaide Festival, Traverse)
By Natalia Equihua | Published on Friday 30 August 2013
In times of civil war the line between tyranny and freedom-fighting can be crossed too easily. ‘Cadre’ explores how thin this line is through the experiences of a South African child during war. This play, written and directed by main actor Omphile Molusi, focuses on the consequences rather than the savagery of a war, thanks to a clever use of lights and shadows. However, the most interesting part is that this production re-enacts the events that changed the lives of millions with only three actors: one moment they are cruel generals, the next innocent women trying to survive. Each character is played with such strength, that at times the actors are unrecognisable. Incredibly powerful.
Traverse Theatre, until 25 Aug (not 1, 2, 5, 12, 19), times vary.
