Bygone (Caligula’s Alibi)
By Samuel Graydon | Published on Wednesday 14 August 2013
I am not sure if I entirely understood this play, or even if I was meant to. There were, admittedly, many parts that were enjoyable and funny. The acting of Jonnie Bayfield and Will Cowell was very good, and there was a clear chemistry between the two actors when engaging in the witty, if obscure, repartee. Yet, this was unfortunately not enough for the play to work, particularly so when I felt confused by what was trying to be said throughout the dialogue. The story of the two men waiting inside of their house waiting for decay to slowly surround them somewhat resembled a mix of Samuel Beckett and ‘Withnail & I’, though with less action and clarity than either.
Zoo, until 26 Aug (not 12), 1.50pm.
