ED2013 5/5 Reviews ED2013 Theatre Reviews
Brand New Ancients (Kate Tempest and Battersea Arts Centre)
By Jade Wilson | Published on Sunday 25 August 2013
We’re all gods in Tempest’s poem, but she is one who will be remembered. I wondered whether this show would live up to the hype, but when I sat in the audience, in the palm of the storyteller’s hand, I could see why Kate Tempest has earned her reputation. This is literature in its purest form; long before we read epic poems we listened to them, accompanied by a lyre; Tempest has strings, a tuba and percussion to lift her lyrical words, as well as beautiful lighting, but the rest is left to your imagination. A celebration of humanity, past and present, this great work turns history on its head because it is by a normal young woman.
Traverse Theatre, until 25 Aug, 11.15pm.
