Boris & Sergey II Perilous Escapade (Flabbergast Theatre / Escalator East To Edinburgh)
By Paige Wilson | Published on Tuesday 13 August 2013
They’re back! Boris and Sergey have escaped from Hell and are here to re-enact the tale. This sequel to last year’s smash hit ‘Vaudevillian Adventures’ (also showing this year) places gleeful, even indulgent emphasis on the action elements of the puppet brothers’ exploits. The gratuitous scenes of infernal combat feel less appropriate than the original, humbler scenario, which is perhaps why the script of ‘Perilous Escapade’ feels painfully stretched at times. Nevertheless, the spectacle remains breathtaking, the pair’s movements are uncannily lifelike and the brothers’ meta-comical dealings with their puppeteers are, if anything, even more inspired. Flabbergast Theatre have once again made this pair of leather sacks feel like living, breathing, action-fighting, loveable dudes. And that’s still pretty goddamn cool.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 Aug (not 13, 21), 11.10pm.
