Bobby Gould In Hell (New Celts Productions and Northern Spark Theatre Company)
By Melissa Steel | Published on Monday 19 August 2013
The Devil is a Welshman in fishing gear, or at least it appears so in this production of David Mamet’s 1989 play. Known only as the Interrogator (Scott Oakley), he and his crony, Assistant (Paul McCloud), ask Bobby Gould (Danny Hutton) if he has been naughty or nice. In fact, Oakley is uncannily like a pantomime baddie Santa Claus, with his eye-wateringly red costume, stick-on horns and camp cackling. However, the stand-out performance comes from Kizzy Lindsay, who plays Bobby’s sparky, incorrigible ex with infectious vivacity. The rest of the performances can be distractingly overacted, losing some of the play’s already weak drive. The production is saved in the end by a slick finale that might just leave you with some Sympathy for the Devil…
