Bluebeard (Trinity Fringe Productions)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

‘Bluebeard’ is truly, truly special. Following the story of one woman’s life pre and post-dementia, it’s a play which firmly keeps one foot in the past and one in the present, while an effortlessly brilliant cast shift through time and characters. This is is intuitively sophisticated new writing, tackling its subject matter with beauty, confidence and effortless grandeur. Wonderfully illuminating, this bright, brilliant piece skillfully juxtaposes the past and present, pitting dream against unforgiving reality. The interpretation and use of the French folk tale from which the play takes its name, is clever and unforced. There were excellent performances all round, but Becky Banatvala was particularly effortless as the protagonist. ‘Bluebeard’ is not promising writing- it is consummate, accomplished and wonderful.
