A Tiny Tempest (TACT)

By | Published on Monday 26 August 2013

Simplistic in its storytelling, this is Shakespeare stripped down, presented as a dreamlike romance of boy meets girl, with some magic thrown in for good measure. Colourful, flamboyant costumes and comic mime make this the ideal production for children, incorporating slapstick elements and painted cardboard shipwrecks. Casting a woman in the lead role was refreshingly unobtrusive and added to the storybook feel of the show, representing Prospero as a matchmaking matriarch. For an adult audience, however, it lacked depth of meaning, even for an abridged production. It relied too heavily on light relief, at the expense of Caliban in particular, who became something of a caricature. Not one for the purists, but perfect for family entertainment.

C, until 26 Aug, 2.10pm.
