4.48 Psychosis (City Of London Academy)
By Imogen Calderwood | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
The abstract and often incomprehensible descriptions of a patient’s experience of clinical depression makes ‘4.48 Psychosis’ painfully difficult to get right. This production of Sarah Kane’s final work, which started life as an AS level project and was developed for its Fringe run, is a valiant effort. Complex movement sequences and well considered choreography help keep the production moving forward, and the cast are clearly talented and work well together. The downfall of this production, however, is the complexity of the play’s emotional content. Without a really thorough working through of the motivation behind all the lines, the temptation is to just shout them: the rage-fuelled delivery, whilst prompting a reaction to begin with, eventually settles into monotony.
