One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (Fourth Monkey)
By Lizzie Milton | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013
It is quite beyond me why Fourth Monkey made a lot of the decisions they did with this production. For starters, it is placed on a thrust stage, which it is clearly not blocked for, so the audience at the sides are left missing out on all the action. Choosing to place it in the eighties and make most of the characters female was an interesting choice, but seemed to have no further consequence than a lot of back-combed hair and garish make-up. The acting showed none of the subtext of the script, making the play virtually un-followable if you were not previously acquainted with the narrative. Ultimately, for all its promise, it was a very shallow performance of a well known classic.
theSpace on Niddry Street, until 24 Aug, 8.20pm.
