The Rakugo Show (Someta Hayashiya)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

“I speak little English” he said humbly but always with a smile. Yet, Someta Hayashiya’s warm personality and charisma were enough to keep an energetic atmosphere. ‘The Rakugo Show’ is a piece of Japanese comedy where the comedian kneels on a stand to tell charmingly funny stories. To break the ice, Hayashiya began with anecdotes about the difficulties of performing Rakugo outside of Japan and introduced us to the sort of comedy we could expect for the next hour. Our imagination was a main element for his stories, but what truly brought a spark to his jokes were his vocalizations, voices and exaggerated gestures. To finish he amused us with traditional Japanese paper cutting, and figures made out of bamboo sticks. This excellent adaptation of Japanese comedy proves that language isn’t always a barrier.
