The Lock In (Breaking Tradition And The Demon Barbers)

By | Published on Sunday 18 August 2013

Breaking Tradition and The Demon Barbers have definitively proven that melding hip-hop with folk dance not only works, but also fuses beautifully. Featuring outstanding beatboxing and some fantastically raucous live music, ‘The Lock In’ both surprised and captivated me in equal measure. An old English pub served as a fitting setting for this blending of dance forms, although the show was at its strongest when the performers simply let their moves do the talking – I personally found the loud-mouthed drummer in drag’s outbursts unnecessary. However, the audience loved it, and having successfully shattered all stereotypes one might mention about both dance forms, the truly talented troupe deserved their well-earned ovation. Morris dancing plus breakin’? Don’t judge; enjoy.

Zoo Southside, until 16 Aug (not 13), 7.10pm.
