Sacred Earth (Ragamala Dance)

By | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013

Bharatanatyam choreography that explores the relationship between humans and nature, through dance, spoken word and live music. It was interesting to see a dance performance with the band on-stage, made up of drumming, percussion, a violin, and singing. The dancers performed their flawless footwork to simple drumbeats that managed to fill the space, the setting of the performance in a Church added echoes and a majestic feel to the entire show. A sense of majesty also came from the beautiful outfits of the four dancers, adorned in gold jewellery. Their facial expressions added the element of storytelling into their dance, as it became a theatrical and emotional experience. With perfect balance and timing, this performance was profound and unique.

Just Festival at St John’s, until 26 Aug, 6.00pm.
