Miyazu – The Little Mermaid (HIBIKart)
By Natalia Equihua | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013
Taiko drums effectively announced that this traditional love story would be told in an untraditional way. ‘Miyazu’ is a reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’, turned into a Japanese-style fairy tale, and the journey is simply spectacular. Masked men entertain us with their playfulness while the sho – a Japanese mouth organ – creates a hypnotising melody. Through interesting movements fabrics are used to recreate the seas and forests, while kimonos with bright colours bring each character to life. The dialogues, however, are in Japanese, and you can’t help but feel that you’re missing out on a key element of the story. Nevertheless, the actors’ expressiveness makes up for the lack of a translation, and their skilful performance will erase any memory of corny Disney versions.
