LA Dance Project (Edinburgh International Festival / LA Dance Project)
By Claudia Marinaro | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013
Featuring Benjamin Millepied’s original piece ‘Moving Parts’, besides Merce Cunningham’s ‘Winterbranch’ and William Forsythe’s ‘Quintett’, this show by LA Dance Project is both a tribute to some of the most brilliant choreographers and composers of the last century and a display of breath-taking original work. Mechanisation is at the core of this show. The constructivist aesthetic of ‘Moving Parts’ counterpoints the fluid choreography. ‘Winterbranch’ is a challenging piece, in which the barely lit ensemble walk or run rather than dance – to the unnerving 2 Sounds by La Monte Young. ‘Quintett’ is a flawless piece with a 13-bar soundtrack repeated hundreds of times. Dance-lovers and connoisseurs will find this a nearly perfect show, if at times a difficult one to follow.
The Edinburgh Playhouse, until 26 Aug, 7.30 pm
