Grendel (Voice Box Theatre Company)
By Jasmine Faller | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
The story of Beowulf’s fight with the monstrous Grendel is well known. Here, Voice box Theatre Company take this well-known and much loved tale and turn Grendel into more than just a monster. There are some very impressive gymnastic poses and balances in this piece, though I was perhaps expecting a little more story. The portrayal of Grendel as the victim is a wonderful idea, but they just don’t do all that much with it. The costumes give it quite a hippie feel, and there is a spectacular dragon puppet to look out for – indeed with all the screeching you cannot miss it! Visually this is a wonderful show, albeit one slightly lacking in content.
theSpace @ Venue45, until 24 Aug, 8.05pm.
