ED2013 5/5 Reviews ED2013 Musical Reviews
The Pirates of Penzance (Durham University Light Opera Group)
By Eilidh Johnstone | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
DULOG have been staging musicals and light opera for over fifty years, and experience makes itself felt in this brilliant production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. The tireless cast dash across the stage between whirlwind costume changes, tossing out high notes with a smile (or appropriate comic expression); and the singing is not only pitch-perfect but also impeccably enunciated, so the audience understand every word even when the music gallops. This whole show gallops, and it gallops with a joy and energy that would have made Gilbert and Sullivan proud. The slightest interlude is filled with applause and whoops, and the audience leave smiling. A delightfully hilarious Victorian romp, this is the very model of a modern Major Musical.
Spotlites @ The Merchant’s Hall, until 26 Aug, 3.55pm.
