ED2013 4/5 Reviews ED2013 Musical Reviews
The Garden (Pauline Knowles, Alan McHugh, directed by Zinnie Harris)

This moving opera, adapted from the original play, portrays a couple living in an overcrowded future world, which has exhausted its resources. We then explore what happens when they suddenly discover a tree growing beneath their kitchen. Mac is a scientist supposedly working to solve the world’s climactic troubles, while Jane is a depressed housewife. The actors’ performances were breathtaking, perfectly balanced between fragility and power. Despite lasting 35 minutes, the plot was well developed, and so absorbing, I wouldn’t have known if one minute had passed or ten. The discordant music and singing blended surprisingly well with the speech, slickly adding to the intense ambience rather than detracting from it. All in all, a captivating experience.
Paterson’s Land, until 14 Aug, 1.00pm.
