ED2013 4/5 Reviews ED2013 Musical Reviews
Sincerely, Mr Toad Starring Keith Jack (Sell A Door Theatre Company In Association With Greenwich Theatre)
By Natasha Gartside | Published on Sunday 11 August 2013
A portrayal of the mind that created Mole and Ratty, here the bright children’s classic ‘The Wind in the Willows’ is foregrounded with scenes from Kenneth Grahame’s melancholic life. Niftily staged by the whole troupe, we see moments of uplifting inspiration and heart-wrenching despair. The set is simple yet dynamic and the music refreshing, but it’s the singing that really brings this play to life: West End quality voices and stirring choruses permeate the performance from start to finish. Kirsty Marie Ayers’ solos are particularly impressive, though it seems unjust to single someone out. Admittedly, there are moments of over-dramatic expression, and at times the singing is slightly drowned out by the accompaniment. Nevertheless: delightful, Mr Toad.
Pleasance Dome, until Aug 26 (not 12), 3.30pm.
