Last One Out (Scottish Opera)
By Julian Joseph | Published on Monday 12 August 2013
The only thing worse than seeing a bad show is a bad show that had a lot of potential. ‘Last One Out’ is performed by incredibly talented singers accompanied beautifully by a string trio, and it is extremely atmospheric due to the effective use of lighting, smoke, set and sound design. However, the writing is deeply flawed, and as a whole, the piece falls apart. The lyrics are awkwardly written, and never seem to fit the character, and the clichéd imagery doesn’t used doesn’t help, plus, radio with a jarringly comic presenter is overused used as a plot device. This leads to a substantial part of the piece showing superb musicians doing nothing, listening to a recording.
Paterson’s Land, until 26 Aug (not 12, 19), 5.15pm.
