Grease! (Portobello Youth Theatre)
By Julian Joseph | Published on Friday 16 August 2013
Interestingly, this 14 – 17 year-old production of ‘Grease!’ – which in many ways is much closer to Jim Jacob’s dramatically censored ‘School version’ – still includes adult elements, such as the smoking, drinking and innuendo. This gives the piece a sense of realism many younger drama groups wouldn’t risk aiming for. As might be expected, actors were keen but nervous, which occasionally created an awkward atmosphere, especially during some songs. Despite this, the drama manages to remain natural; the group excel at getting into character and there is a very distinct dynamic for the ‘Jocks’, the ‘Pink Ladies’ and the ‘T-birds’. A valiant effort from young actors with clear enthusiasm and potential.
