Footloose (Viva Youth Theatre)
By Holly Sharp | Published on Sunday 18 August 2013
Footloose. Good tunes, but if your only experience is the film; let’s face it, it wasn’t the best (sorry Kevin). With this weighty slice of scepticism I approached ‘Viva Youth Theatre’s’ show; I’m happy to say they blast their movie counterpart out the water. There are some patchy vocals (volume croaks out around the high notes), a couple of dodgy accents and a few hammy performances, but these are eclipsed by outstanding performances from city boy Ren, rebel Ariel and her best pal Rusty, who all give levels of performance way beyond their years. Yes it’s cheesy, you won’t leave pondering big questions, but what did you expect? A fizzing performance which showcases some future stars; exactly what youth theatre should be, gutsy, energetic and unapologetic.
