Canticles (Carpe Diem Productions)
By Katharine Wootton | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
It’s important to state that this is nothing like the contemporary and snazzy adaptation of Britten’s ‘Canticles’. Instead, it’s a far more simple, solemn and entirely holy, rendition of the evangelical canticles from the Gospel of St Luke. Set plainly but serenely to a string quartet and four voices by Peter D. Robinson, ‘Canticles’ is a soothing and uplifting affair. Soprano Anna Chidgey shines with her elegant, crystal vocals, as does strong Mezzo, Gillian Haycock. The males voices are not quite as charismatic, and parts of the canticles do seem tired rather than tuneful. But though far from the most dramatic of classical works, this production nevertheless offers a quiet sanctum, full of graceful music.
