Albion Forlorn (English Cabaret in association with C)

Billed as “a torch song for the state we’re in”, ‘Albion Forlorn’ was instead a confused muddle of songs strung together by vague social commentary. The show began with some fluffed lines, and one got the sense that certain members of the cast weren’t really up to performing, and possibly weren’t even trying. Others managed to keep the show afloat with their accomplished song and dance, however. The alto singer was particularly talented and powerful, while the music, played on a keyboard, was tender and melodic, and the lyrics touched on a range of topics, from freedom of religion to the perils of success. Overall, however, the performance lacked presence and conviction, and despite a few striking moments and glimmers of potential, remained uninspired.

C aquila, until 26 Aug (not 13), 6.20pm.
