A Midsummer’s Night Savoy (Accend Productions)
By Patricia-Ann Young | Published on Sunday 18 August 2013
In this diet version of Shakepeare’s classic ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ a good few edges are shaved off here and there and replaced with a musical twist. With only Puck returning for the sequel, he’s up to his old tricks giving love a tricky time of running its true course. The musical numbers are lovely, being quite reminiscent of the old classic Disney songs, and are beautifully sung by the cast. In a strange way, the highly accomplished nature of the music shines a bright light on the contrasting thespian problem, with the cast members all on a varying spectrum of under or overcooking their respective roles. Still, the production manages to be a vaguely enchanting take on an old classic.
Gryphon Venues at The Point Hotel, until 10 Aug, 8.15pm.
