VAMM (VAMM / The Assembly Rooms)
By Robert Stuart | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013
The translation of Shetlandic word ‘vamm’ means to bewitch or entrance. And for much of this performance the audience was transfixed by these three talented performers who played a myriad of songs from across the Celtic world, through Northern Ireland, Norway and, of course, Scotland. Armed with two fiddles and a låtmandola (don’t ask), Patsy Reid, Catriona MacDonald and Marit Faït maintained a fine balance and flow with the structuring of the show, oscillating between jigs and waltzes effortlessly. In such a large venue, they filled the room with great emotion in their playing, which was lapped up by the audience. For music confined to such a formal venue, the atmosphere was much more like a gig in a more intimate setting.
The Assembly Rooms, until 24 Aug, 7.40pm.
