The 27 Club (Jack Lukeman)
By Ivan Kroupin | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
I would have been annoyed by ‘The 27 Club’ had it been playing in the background of a noisy pub. As a full-on spectacle it was all but unbearable. Lukeman’s voice was impressive, but the uniform delivery and absurd stage antics resembled those of an ageing Vegas-based impersonator; endless phoney melodrama and failed attempts at audience involvement were painful to watch. This standardised, sterilised performance of some of the most emotionally charged, visceral music of modern times felt sacrilegious; the songs of the forever-young packaged, branded, and sold to a well-dressed middle-aged middle class crowd. About half of whom, it must be said, swayed along merrily to Lukeman’s bastardised ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
