COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Mike Whellans (Mike Whellans)
‘People usually ask me: where are the band?’ Mike Whellans said as he arranged his drums, put the harmonica closer to his lips, and caressed the strings of his guitar. As the set opened with some of Whellans’ own songs, the mood was so casual it was like stepping into his home. However, it soon became clear that the real prowess lay in Whellans’ impressive array of harmonicas. These were especially delightful when he surprised us with some John Lee Hooker; and soon the audience were dancing to ‘Bright Lights, Big City,’. The end came much too soon. “I could play for another hour”, he announced as a farewell. “Yes, please!” we all answered; if only he could have continued until dawn.
