Damien Dempsey (Damien Dempsey / The Assembly Rooms)
By Helena Wadia | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
“Let’s sing together, because when we sing, we give our souls a cuddle”. After Damien Dempsey opened with these words, it was impossible not to enjoy every part of his gig. Starting with ‘Sing All Our Cares Away’, Dempsey was extremely passionate from the very beginning. The Irish singer-songwriter encouraged audience participation and created an excellent rapport, resulting in a lot of (friendly) heckling. He proved that keeping things simple can be very effective – the magic comes from just his voice and his guitar, yet his political streak and passionate words still shine through. With a mixture of upbeat songs, sad ones, general hilarity and a particularly raucous audience, Damien Dempsey’s gig was pure gold.
The Assembly Rooms, until 14 Aug, 7.40pm.
