ED2013 4/5 Reviews ED2013 Music Reviews
Carnatic Nomad (Jyotsna Srikanth)
By Ankur Shah | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
I can’t say I’ve ever seen a violin held or played like this ever before, but Jyotsna Srikanth is simply sublime. Joining her are a double-headed drum and a mridangam, which seems even harder to play than pronounce. The performers are at their best whilst improvising, demonstrating an impressive versatility. I was also pleased to learn musical terms and techniques throughout, as the musicians offer a great deal of knowledge, demystifying the southern Indian classical tradition. This show is something of an acquired taste and will not be for everyone. But if you can allow yourself to be immersed in their masterful, mesmerising music, you’ll be exposing your mind to an otherworldly sensation.
theSpace @ Symposium Hall, until 10 Aug, 5.30pm.
