Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered (Lorna Reid)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Sunday 25 August 2013
Scottish Jazz-singer Lorna Reid has a rich, mellow voice ideally suited to bluesy tunes and intimate gigs. As the show’s title suggests, there’s plenty of Rodgers and Hart in this set list, but there’s also lots of variety. Reid sings jazz standards, originals and even a cracking cover of Tom Waits’ ‘Picture In A Frame.’ With a clear emotional connection to the tunes, she takes evident pleasure in giving each one her own romantic, resonant twist. She’s accompanied by a solid, laid-back trio, and though only guitarist Graeme Stephen really gets a chance to stand out, he shows a flair for crisp, flurrying solos. Smooth, soulful and sultry, this show manages to be simultaneously warm and very cool.
