Bang On A Can All Stars (Edinburgh International Festival)
By Joseph Trotter | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013
Acclaimed Brooklyn-based Bang On A Can All Stars have brought their latest project, Field Recordings, to the EIF this year to couple multimedia pieces with their trademark electric chamber ensemble. Unfortunately, the quality of the pieces varies wildly; while those of Mira Calix and David Lang almost drive the audience to slumber, Anna Clyne’s A Wonder Day and Thurston Moore’s encore piece are terrific, vitriolic affairs that drag the show from its self-absorbed meander. As good a group of musicians as the ensemble clearly are, they are badly let down by the material, which swings from the avant-garde to the avant-gardeloo. A better quality check would have meant a better production.
Usher Hall, 23 Aug, 8.00pm.
