Will Mars – Americana (Free Festival)

Will Mars’s relationships in recent years have centred around a search for his perfect woman: an amalgamation of rom-com actress Meg Ryan and porn star Jenna Jameson. Mars has a natural presence on stage and is quite likeable, though in speaking about his failure to stay happy in relationships, and how the idea of committing to a marriage with children puts him off, he sometimes comes across as bitter and at times misogynistic. It’s a confusing thing, when someone you want to like tells you he’s a serial adulterer. I think the small audience probably threw him off a little but, ultimately, there were too few laughs here to lift Mars’s chronic cynicism to a good comedy place.
