ED2013 1/5 Reviews ED2013 Comedy Reviews

Splitshift (PBH’s Free Fringe)

The amiable Dan Triscott hosts this unimpressive comedy show, featuring Mabel Slattery and Owen Hughes; two completely different comedians. Slattery was the stuttering, self-deprecating nerd. Despite trying hard, and humbling the crowd with her friendly manner, she lacked many strong jokes. It felt like I was just watching her talk about herself, with no structure or theme. Hughes played the dark and tormented soul, possessed with voices in his head – again without jokes. His performance was cringe-worthy and intimidating at times. He occasionally shouted furiously into the mic when acting out the dialogue in his own confused drama. Rather than delivering an effective piece of comedy, he ended up performing to himself and scaring me in the process.

Opium @ Main Theatre, until 13 Aug, 5.15pm.
