Rod Woodward – Funny Turn
By Ian Freeman | Published on Friday 16 August 2013
Rod rallies against meat-head gym goers, Ryanair and poor quality European theme parks in this recycled and sadly somewhat unimaginative performance. There are a few jokes that are built up subtly and deliver a well timed punchline that have some audience members, particularly the more elderly ones, chortling away. Unfortunately the time between these sparse comedic moments are too prolonged and filled with generally inane chat, plus, some of his material is almost identical to jokes he told in 2009, only this time some of the vigour and energy has disappeared from the act. Throwaway quips about the rather ramshackle room around him do get the crowd a little more engaged, as does an imaginative new variant of clapping. Unfortunately it’s not enough to save him from mediocrity.
Just the Tonic at The Caves, until 25 Aug (not 13 Aug), 6.20pm.
