Rich Hall’s Hoedown (Off the Kerb Productions)
By Joseph Trotter | Published on Wednesday 14 August 2013
When good, Rich Hall’s Hoedown is very good; it matches lyrical dexterity with genuine and talented musicianship, creating stomping, tub-thumping, hilarious country tunes. When it fails to reach these heights, there is an awful lot of meandering, both during the songs and the long pauses filled by Hall’s cunning if sometimes wayward crowd interaction. The running time is also overly long; an hour would have cut down the self-indulgence, allowing for a more honed, precise musical spectacle. Instead, we have a half-way house; a fun and interesting show, but one that is too preoccupied with itself to be truly outstanding.
Assembly George Square, until 25 Aug, 11.00pm.
