Raph Shirley – A Portrait Of A Provincial Dickhead (Raph Shirley / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Victoria Beardwood | Published on Saturday 10 August 2013
It’s not often that I think a show so dire as to count the seconds before I can leave. Unfortunately, such was the case with this calamitous performance. Shirley portrays a ‘character’, meaning – as is helpfully explained by the comic – anything offensive is OK, because it’s clearly ironic. Seemingly revelling in his own terrible act, Shirley rattled through 45 minutes of incoherent material, based on a ridiculous story set in the nineties. After a whole performance of no laughs, and some departing audience members, I sensed that perhaps the whole point may have been to be as bad as possible. But even if this was the point, it was still a colossal waste of time.
Bristo Bar & Kitchen, until 24 Aug (not 17), 3.00pm.
