ED2013 3/5 Reviews ED2013 Comedy Reviews
Patrick Monahan Cake Charmer (Vivienne Smith Management Ltd)
By Rory Morgan | Published on Friday 16 August 2013
Making possibly the most energetic entrance of all the comedians at the Festival this year, Patrick Monahan consistently engages with his audience, and offers extremely accessible humour. The show is framed by audience involvement and a lot of the material is dependent on the enthusiasm of the audience. Monahan is excellent at this, and at handling the crowd, but his actual material is not exactly revolutionary or especially sophisticated. As a result, it feels as though the material that doesn’t heavily involve the audience is falling a little flat. Occasionally the set felt a little bit like a taping for ‘Take Me Out’; some will love this tone whilst others will not. If you are keen to to get fully engaged with your comedy entertainer, Monahan’s set will be pleasure.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 25 Aug, 8.45pm.
